This workshop will address how white supremacy, domestic terrorism and violence will hurt everyone in the UMD community. We will learn how these ideologies appear in our communities and practice techniques for engaging and challenging these ideas.
This workshop is open to all students, faculty and staff members in the A. James Clark School of Engineering.
On May 20th, 2017, Second Lt. Richard Collins III was murdered by a UMD student. His alleged murderer started out as an engineering student at UMD. Dr. Ronald Zeigler, Director of the Nyumburu Cultural Center, posed the following question at a UMD Town Hall on June 1st, 2017: “How many more Urbanski's are there on our campus? And what are we doing to challenge and prevent their violent ideology from spreading?”
This is the first workshop in a series which will cover various social topics relevant to students, faculty and staff members in engineering. Empowering Voices in Engineering is a student-led committee, founded in the Materials Science & Engineering Department (MSE). Funding for this event comes from MSE and the A. James Clark School of Engineering Dean's Office. If you would like to join our committee please email: eveumd@gmail.com
